Recipe for a Simmer Pot

I saw this idea on several other blogs and I thought it was wonderful so I made some for our Sunday School teachers as a THANK YOU for all they do. =0)

I tested it out before giving them away as little gifts and I was really impressed with how good it made the house smell. Yum! I just had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a drink!

My version per jar:
1/2 sliced lemon
1/2 sliced orange
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tbsp whole cloves
1 tsp Italian herbs (dried)

Tip: you can buy spices and herbs much cheaper in the Hispanic cooking aisle of your grocery store usually than in the regular spice aisle.

Fill a jar with the above ingredients and then fill with water. Tie with a ribbon or raffia. Use an address label to stick on directions:

Simmer Pot
Empty this jar into a pot on your stove (or crock-pot on high) and add another full jar of water and simmer on low for aroma for several hours. After it has reduced back down, place contents back into jar and store in refrigerator till ready to use again.

Thanks for sharing this great idea! I think I'm going to add this to my homemade gifts for Christmas this year...thanks again!

how long do they last all pretty in the jar??

I don't actually know the answer to that. After you simmer it the water will now be a cinnamon color but since it's just citrus and herbs I would guess that it would last quite awhile. I think it will start to lose it's scent by the time you were ready to throw it out and start fresh.

Great idea! I saw it on another blog and kinda raised my eyebrow at it. So do you think that the cinnamon preserves the contents or will they get rotty after awhile?

I didn't even think about the cinnamon preserving it...good point. I was thinking the citrus would kind of preserve it...I think lemon has preserving qualities to it. I've had one for over a week now in the fridge and it seems fine. I would think it would be good for several weeks if not a few months. That would be my guess but I did really like this! I have one in my fridge that I plan on pulling out again.

These are the small size jam canning jars but you can use just about any size with any amount of water. =0)

do you seal the jars? Could I start making these now for gifts and seal them up?

I don't seal them but I guess you could if you wanted to. =0) Let us know how it works for you! When I did them I just did them the day before I gave them away.

any feedback from people you gave them too? Just curious? THANKS!

Yes, they loved them. They mentioned how nice it was to have it simmering in their crock-pot when their house was for sale in the fall/winter and another said that she had hers simmering during a family Christmas party and it smelled so good. They were a big hit!
