I'm not sure...oatmeal is sweeter but the rice is just different I guess. My kids prefer the rice cooked on the stove as opposed to the crock-pot (which makes it mushier) but my daughter does prefer the rice to oatmeal. The rice is one of our top breakfasts that we have often. We do put organic brown sugar on it, butter, and milk as well to sweeten it up.
I've made this a couple of times and I like it, but it turns out pretty dry around the edges, thus I lose a good portion of the rice. I used 4.5 cups the second time around and had the same problem. Any suggestions?
My guess is that you are using a bigger crock-pot than I do for breakfast foods. This one pictured is about a 4 qt. The less amount of food in a crock-pot the hotter it will cook. So, I think your idea of doubling the recipe is great or try just adding more water....but the more water you add the potential for it to be really mushy. I would try doubling it first. It will make a lot but you could heat it up for several days leftover. Hope that helps and glad you like it! =0)
I'm on a quest to cook healthier for my family which hopefully means that the recipes posted here keep getting healthier. I started out posting our old favorite recipes and now I'm sharing my new tried and true healthy recipes with you. I started this blog as a way to record our recipes for our children which I'll make into a book using Blurb. In the future we hope to make our recipes available to you in printed form.
who am I?
I'm a pastor's wife and homeschooling mom in my 30s. Serving my husband, managing my home, and caring for my family are my focus and joy. I love the color red, all things vintage, gardening, camping, books, and cooking of course. I collect old furniture, snack plates from the 50s, tea pots, tea cups, and I think a cake pedestal is a must in every home.
Have a healthy recipe for me to try? email me and if I try it I'll give you credit.

why cook?
"The person who decides what shall be the food and drink of a family, and the modes of it's preparation, is the one who decides, to a greater or less extent, what shall be the health of that family. It is the opinion of most medical men, that intemperance in eating is one of the most fruitful of all causes of disease and death."

Also, have you ever tried doubling this?
Thanks.
