Edible Play Clay

My daughter begs me almost daily if she can bake something. She really just wants to mix dough and roll it out and cut it into shapes. AND nibble on the dough. This homemade play clay is not only incredibly fun and easy to make but it's edible (and HEALTHY) so your little ones can pretend bake and nibble away. You can store it in a container in the fridge for a few days and take it back out and let it sit at room temperature till softened.

This recipe provides hours of entertainment at our house.

1/2 c smooth peanut butter (I use Costco's organic PB)
1/4 c honey (I use Fit To Eat brand, non-pasteurized)
1/4 c unbleached flour plus a few tbsps extra as needed (I use white organic flour)

Mix together the above until crumbly like in picture adding 1 tbsp at a time of extra flour to get the right consistency. Then knead it till smooth.

I have a similar recipe for edible play dough, it's ingredients are:
1 C Honey
1 C Smooth Peanut Butter
1 C Powdered Sugar
2 Tbsp. Flour (more or less to reduce stickiness)

Another great play dough that can be dyed any color you want is:
1 C Flour
1 package Kool-Aid (any flavor)
1 Tbsp Cream of tartar
1 Tbsp Vegetable oil
1/4 C Salt
3/4 C Boiling Water (start with 3/4 C and add more if too dry)

Mix all dry ingredients in bowl then add in oil, then pour boiling water in and mix thoroughly. Wrap in cellophane or air tight container and store in fridge. Throw away within 4 weeks. Smells good but tastes awful!

I've gotta try this, since I have two kiddos who like to "taste" their play dough too! I use coscto's organic peanut butter too & I use honey from the local farmers. Do you find that this recipe is greasy though or do you just use enough flour to prevent that?

Yes, it is greasy but that makes it very workable without sticking to everything. I like the fact that it is greasy so that it's easy for them to use. You could try using more flour though in order to cut down on the greasy.

I've seen recipes that call for about 1/4 cup of powdered milk and maybe that helps make it dryer but I don't like to use powdered milk in things for health purposes.
