WHY?
1. it makes it fast and easy when I always know right where something is. And even if I don't know exactly where it is in there I at least know where to start looking.
2. it helps my family to put things back where they found them!
HOW?
I label my pantry shelves by categories. Here are my categories:
Breakfast
Baking
Snacks
Canned Goods
Pasta
Bottled Goods (cooking wines, sauces, oils, etc.)
Seasonings (this includes mixes, croutons, etc.)
Cookbooks
Drinks (hot cocoa, apple cider, coffee, tea, etc.)
You can label your pantry in anyway that works for you. I would just warn against breaking down your categories too far...the idea is to make it fast to put things back and I can tell you that if you have too many categories that it will be hard for your family to follow.
I use masking tape to label mine with a black sharpie marker. Not very fancy but it's cheap and easy. You could use a label maker if you have one and boy would that look nice. Or if you're the creative type you can come up with an idea like this....

You gotta have a big enough pantry to even be able to do this I would think! Great idea though!
Even a small pantry can be organized. That said, that first pantry is waaaaaay too empty to be useful.
I agree! That first pantry needs a lot more in it! =0) Yes, and even small pantries can benefit from organization!
I don't have a pantry, unfortunately, just one cupboard and a half above my prime, working counter by the stove. So I have to keep things grouped together, if not labeled. I put soups together, and pastas, and tomato products, canned tuna and salmon, and so forth. I have a turntable cabinet with my cereals, baking supplies, and small appliances.
With such a small kitchen, I have to be choosy about what I give space to .... keeping like-grouped-with-like helps me make sure I have what I need on hand.
Great idea! I'ts about time for me to re-organize my pantry. Maybe I will get motivated and do some cute labels like the last ones!
